Safaris in Rwanda and Uganda

Rwanda is a highly populous and extremely scenic mountainous little country, making for amazing Rwanda safari tours. Unfortunately best known for the 1994 genocide, the country has tried very hard to move on and the shadow cast is no longer so totally black.

The main reason to come here is to visit the mountain gorillas in the Virunga Mountains area to the north of the country. For most people this means flying in and out of the capital Kigali and heading north for two or three nights. An expensive but rare experience. The main reason for an extended stay is to visit the chimpanzees of the Nyungwe area to the south. This combination necessitates a stop in the scenic Lake Kivu area in between, adding up to around a week in country.

More conventional savanna safari is also possible at the low key Akagera national park to the east. The majority of our guests visiting the gorillas do so in combination with a safari in Northern Tanzania, flying direct from Kigali into Serengeti.

Uganda is an absolute jewel of a country, much under-rated and relatively little-visited. Along the western side of the country the volcanic landscapes are simply awesome, with dramatic mountain peaks, lush tropical forests, flooded calderas, broad lakes, open savanna and verdant farmlands.

Obvious highlights include gorilla tracking in Bwindi Forest and chimpanzee tracking at Kibale Forest. Savanna landscapes at Queen Elizabeth, Murchison Falls and the incredibly remote Kidepo national parks provide more conventional safari environments. White-water rafting on the Nile below Jinja is amongst the finest in the world.

Historically these areas have been accessed by arduous overland safaris, but the recent introduction of light aircraft services has greatly improved the accessibility and made Uganda a lot more attractive a proposition for a wider range of travellers. Another new flight routing now makes it possible to combine the highlights of Uganda with savanna safari in the Serengeti.
